The Exhibition

The leading authority on the group, Roger Billcliffe, is curating the exhibition, which will feature a largely new selection of paintings, different from the highly popular Glasgow Boys exhibition shown last year in Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum and the Royal Academy, London.

Over 50 paintings will be on display, representing 20 artists, and including 8 paintings by Kirkcudbright’s own ‘Glasgow Boy’ E A Hornel. The paintings are being lent from private and public collections, including Glasgow Museums, the Hunterian Art Gallery, the Royal Scottish Academy and the Fleming Collection in London. A previously unknown painting of a Kirkcudbright subject by George Henry – ‘Cabbage Patch, Kirkcudbright’ – is being kindly lent from a private collection. It is reproduced here, and shows a typical realist work of the mid 1880s, with the spire of the Kirkcudbright Tolbooth visible in the background.

An illustrated booklet for the exhibition is also being produced, following the popularity of the ‘Glasgow Girls’ book published in 2010. Copies of the ‘Glasgow Girls’ may still be purchased from The Stewartry Museum and Tolbooth Art Centre, Kirkcudbright, priced at £10.

The exhibition runs in Kirkcudbright Town Hall from 2 July to 29 August 2011, and is open every day including Sundays, from 10am to 6pm. Admission is free, but donations are very welcome! For further details you can contact the Stewartry Museum, Kirkcudbright at stewartrymuseum@dumgal.gov.uk or on 01557 331643.
